Transendental Meditation



First off, yes I realized that up above, I spelled Transendental Meditation incorrectly, but Transcendental is one of the those words that more people spell wrong than right anyway, so just to make it easier for those searching for information on Transcendental Meditation, I'll be using both spellings. I'm quirky that way.

Transcendntal meditation is practiced around the world, and it's practiced by those of varying belief systems. It's not a type of meditation where a specific set of beliefs is required. After all, those who practice this type of meditation are only seeking the benefits that are available to all.


Beginnings

Transcendental meditation was brought to this world by a man by the name of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It gained popularity a couple of decades later and became widely teached through TM centers located throughout the world, as it is today.

Benefits

When comparing Transendental Meditation to other forms of meditation, You'll find similar overlapping benefits, such as:

  • Reducing stress
  • Restoring balance
  • Eliminating or improving the effects of depression
  • Improving Concentration
  • Increasing Creativity
  • Improved state of well-being

But those that practice this form of meditation believe these benefits are heightened using TM, as opposed to other less structured forms of meditation.

The benefits of Transcendental Meditation, or any meditation for that matter, are difficult to measure from a scientific standpoint. This is due to the fact that the improved areas may be looked at from a skeptical point of view as being purely placebo. However, I don't believe the placebo reasoning is valid, as some longtime students of TM continue to experience these benefits, whereas the placebo effect would have worn off with time. Like anything metaphysical, you have to experience it yourself, and then you can decide.

Concluding Views

The best way to explore an organized program of Transcendental Meditation, is to check out a TM center. Before you spend your hard-earned cash though, try to study as much about it as you can to see if it's for you. I personally can't give a testimonial of the effects of TM, as I've never went through a TM program myself, although I do know several people who have practiced it on their own, and reported back with positive results. I can see however how it can be very effective to the serious student, who's willing to apply him or herself.
